Manchester

Manchester is a city in the North West of England. The place is named from the old British name Mamucium plus ceaster, derived from the old Latin ‘Castra’. Mamucium is Celtic for "breast-shaped hill". Manchester is a metropolitan borough with city status. The borough has a population of 437,000, whilst the urban area has a population of 2,237,000, and is situated in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester which has a population of 2,539,000. It is one of Britain's biggest cities and is regarded by some as England’s second city, a title also claimed by Birmingham.

Some still view that the city still remains to the county of Lancashire the county that it was split from in 1974.

The name ‘Manchester’ is often used to refer to the entire metropolis (which extends even outside Greater Manchester), much as ‘London’ is usually used to mean Greater London. People from Manchester are called Mancunians.
